Welcome all to Sema Jambo!

Which simply means Say Hi in the Beautiful Language – Kiswahili!

Growing up in Kenya, we were not accustomed to speaking Kiswahili at home, a shortfall of our parents who believed English is the preferred language. Moving to the United Kingdom, I managed to learn the language through Swahili-speaking friends at university. It has been my dream to launch Sema Jambo so as to share with diverse communities in the UK and beyond, the culture, music, dance and food of the people of my grandmother’s ancestral land, Lamu, Kenya. People who through inter-marriages with the early Chinese, Portuguese, Persians, and Omani Arabs merchants who sailed the East Coast of Africa.

Sema Jambo is about sharing these cultures, music and food with the rest of the world and opening the doors of Swahili-speaking countries to the world traveller.
This July we officially launch our first public event a Kiswahili Evening to celebrate ICONs of this Beautiful Language – Unsung Heroes who have created awareness of BeautifulSwahili through music, art, writing, dance and food – a first in the UK and probably in the World.

Sema Jambo, like our sister organisation, MTM Awards is about bringing diverse communities together.

World Kiswahili Day …another chapter was written at the River Room of the House of Lords London ..

The World Kiswahili Day event held at the River Room of the House of Lords in London on Thursday, July 6th, was a momentous occasion. Brother Nassir, also known as Nasri Mohammed Abdallah, made history as the first Taarab artist to perform in the Houses of Parliament.
His acapella rendition of “Dil Ek Mantha Hai” was magical and took Taarab to a new level. Young talents like Di Namite and Raquel Sheikh showcased their skills and added to the evening of firsts.
The Glittering Gala Evening on Friday, July 7th, at Westminster Central Hall celebrated the richness of Swahili culture. The event featured the grand launch of the 1st Sema Jambo Awards (SJA) by MTM, recognizing outstanding achievements within the Swahili-speaking community.
The venue was beautifully transformed with Swahili aesthetics, including KISUTU fabric and DHOWS concepts by Q, and craftsmanship by Huris Collection from Mombasa, Kenya.
It was an unforgettable and culturally enriching experience, and World Kiswahili Day will be back in 2024!
